ESRM 325- Environmental Application of Plants
This was a three-credit course I took for fun that focused on how we can use plants for bioremediation (i.e. removal of pollutants) and as a source for bioenergy. We looked at both current and proposed uses of plants for these purposes, including the use of genetic engineering, and what environmental problems could be solved with these methods. This was a very positive class compared to most ESRM courses because it focused on what solutions we have to pollution, climate change, habitat loss, etc., and encouraged that we will one day be able to solve the majority of these problems. I really enjoyed this course and wouldn't mind taking another class from Professor Sharon Doty again.

ESRM 441- Landscape Ecology
This was an interesting class that focused on the study of landscapes, the benefits of observing ecosystems on a landscape scale, and how one takes measurements at that scale. This course for me reviewed a lot of material I already knew so I didn't find it the most intellectually stimulating, but the topics we covered were nevertheless engaging. Best of all, the course involved an absolutely wonderful field trip to the Colombia Gorge!
Some photos from the field trip are included below:
