Honors 345 A- Interdisciplinary Writing Seminar: Pilgrimages and Idle Travels
Course Description: "Reading, writing and traveling are all acts of the imagination. This course will allow us to "see" the places we've already visited, and imagine the places we plan on visiting. Our workshop will offer the memoirist as well as the returning traveler a way to synthesize her experiences, transforming them into essays, articles, poems or stories. Our time together will help to set a practice for writing and exploring so that a traveler or a memoirist can have a method of documenting her upcoming journey."
It was incredibly refreshing to take a writing class again, especially one where you were allowed to write whatever you wanted as long as it was memoir. Along with reading some fantastic books, I also ended up writing rather personal stories that I had never thought of telling before. Writing about personal events rather than an academic review or research paper was intimidating at first, but with a bit of help I ended up being pretty satisfied with my pieces. This course also introduced me to something completely new: an enjoyable peer-review experience. On top of refining my writing skills, this class offered a safe space for positive critique and the sharing of ideas in order to make my writing stronger. It was great to be able to write, read, and share stories in this positive environment and I am very happy I was able to take this class before graduating!
Below is my final reflection for this course as well as my midterm paper, written about my childhood dog:
